Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops Doubleheader in Canyon

Canyon, TX-- Due to weather in the forecast, the softball doubleheader between Western New Mexico and West Texas was moved up an hour today with both games called in five innings.

In game one, the Lady Mustangs scored early on a single from Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) bringing in Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) and Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) for a 2-0 lead. West Texas answered in the bottom of the inning, crushing three straight homers tallying four runs. Erica Vessels of WT would fly out to center field, ending the inning and leaving one stranded at third.

A error by WT drove in one more for Western, followed by a single from Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) to bring home Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake)

The rest of the game was a slug fest by WT, setting a new NCAA DII single game record 10 home runs.

Six players recorded hits for the Lady Mustangs, with Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola), Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) and Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) leading with two a piece. Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) contibuted a hit, as well as two RBIs.

Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) had two strikeouts, on top of five walks. Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) started on the mound for Western, allowing four runs on four hits with one walk and one strikeout.

GAME 2:

Immediately following a 21-4 loss, WNMU was back on the field for the third game of the series, second of the day.

Similar to game one, WT was heavy at the plate scoring multiple runs in each inning.

Garcia and Maldonado continued to lead their team in hits with two and three respectively in game two. Unfortunately the third inning efforts were not enough as WT took home a 14-3 win in five innings played.

Julia Vegs pitched a complete game, allowing 14 runs on 16 hits, with five walks and three strikeouts. Maldonado was 3-for-3 on the day with one run an RBI. Garcia finished 2-for-3 with one run, Habitzreuther notched one hit and one RBI in the loss.

The Lady Mustangs will remain on the road traveling back in state to take on New Mexico Highlands in a doubleheader Sunday.

Game times are slated for 11 a.m and 1 p.m.
