Softball Faces Oklahoma Christian and Southern Nazarene to Open Season

Lubbock, TX – The Western New Mexico Lady Mustangs softball team opened their season at the TAJ Hospitality College Softball Kickoff tournament Friday. The team threatened early but came up short against Oklahoma Christian 6-1. In their second game of the day the Lady Mustang's fight from an early deficit wasn't enough falling 14-16 to Southern Nazarene.

Western threatened early against the Eagles as Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) walked and advanced twice on wild pitches. A pop-up to third, and fly to left field would leave her stranded. The Eagles would strike first scoring on a single to center field.

Scoreless in the second, Marina Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View High School) would ground out enough to bring in Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) for the first run of the game. OC would answer in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead. They would score three more times in the bottom of the fourth, and their final run in the bottom of the sixth to take home the victory.

Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) (0-1) pitched all six innings for the Lady Mustangs allowing just four earned runs in the loss. Kaylie Upton (1-0) for the Eagles took her first win of the season, allowing five hits and one run.

Coplan scored the only run for the Lady Mustangs, while Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) (2) and Yasmeen Gastelum (Phoenix, AZ/Pinnacle) (1) tallied hits.

The second game of the day saw the Lady Mustangs take on Southern Nazarene.

The Storm wasted no time getting on the board as Kaley Knox walked, stealing second and third eventually scoring on a catcher error. A homer in the second with a runner on second, brought in two more runs for the Storm. After another two run scored in the top of the third, a pitching change for the Mustangs looked to stop the scoring run. Southern Nazarene, however, capitalized and scored 10 runs that inning on seven hits.

Western had a big home half of their own scoring six runs on three hits. Tycee Coplan (Taylor, AZ/Snowflake) would reach on a short stop error, advancing to third on a Maldonado single. A hit-by-pitch would load the bases and bring Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) to the plate. A single, and error by the left fielder got her to second, driving in two runs for Western. A wild pitch would drive in Garcia for their third run.

Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City) homered to center field driving in three more runs for her team rounding out the inning. Bottom of the fourth, Habitzreuther answered with another three run homer, closing in on the SNU lead. The 10th and 12th for the Lady Mustangs were on homers as well, another from Castillo and one from Maldonado.

In one last effort in the bottom of the seventh, Garcia singled to second bringing in Justyce Millan – Martinez and a sac-fly to center brought in Coplan. Another fly out to center field would end it at 16-14 in favor of SNU.

Both Habitreuther and Maldonado finished 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs. Teammate, Castillo was 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs. As a team, Western had 14 runs on 14 hits.

Julia Vega (Tucson, AZ/University High School) made her debut for Western, pitching two innings allowing 7 runs on 5 hits. Lyanna Waddell saw time on the mound, pitching two innings before Jayln McClain (El Centro, CA) came in to close.

WNMU will turn around and face off with LSC foe Midwestern State at 1:30 p.m (CT) followed by Chadron State at 4 p.m (CT) on Saturday.
