Womens Comeback Falls Short against Cameron

Silver City, N.M. – Stepping back into conference play, the western women outscored their opponents 44-29 in the second half of play, but fell short of the comeback falling 68-61 to Cameron Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs won the battle of the boards 42-37, but the Aggies could not be stopped beyond the arc.

Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)21-points | 15 rebounds | 1 block | 2 assists
Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) – 10-points | 6 rebounds | 4 steals | 1 block
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • CU opened play with a three, WNMU would answer with six consecutive points to go up by three.
  • CU turned the table when they went on a 10-0 scoring run.
  • Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) knocked down a jumper to keep her team within single digits going into the second quarter.
  • Quarter two was all CU, as the Aggies used a powerful presence in the paint as well as connected beyond the arc to take 20-plus lead at the half.
  • Coming out of the locker room, Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) took matters into her own hands grabbing three offensive rebounds in the opening 20-seconds of the third quarter to keep possession.
  • The Aggies maintained a double-digit lead throughout, but WNMU managed to close it to 15 going into the final quarter.
  • WNMU outscored CU 22-15 in the third.
  • Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) put it in, to push the Mustangs back within single-digits.
  • Despite keeping the Aggies to just 14-points in the final quarter, the gap was too large to comeback from.

The Western Women will return to Drag's Court next Saturday for another conference matchup with MSU Texas. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. MST.
