Mustangs Compete at New Mexico State

Las Cruces, N.M – With a week off to recuperate, the Mustangs stepped out of conference play for an exhibition match with Division I New Mexico State Wednesday night in Las Cruces. Western held their own against their opponent for a majority of the contest. NMSU caught fire in the fourth to post 25 points, while holding the Mustangs to 13. WNMU shot 37.3 percent from the field, and 42.9 from deep.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) – 11-points | 3-3 3PT | 2-2 FT
Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) – 10-points | 5 rebounds
Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) – 9-points | 3-3 3PT
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) captured the first score of the game for WNMU driving to the basket for the layup.
  • Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) kick started the Mustang offense in the first to close out a 10-point deficit, scoring seven points to trail by one at the end of the first.
  • A three from Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) tied it up at 19, followed by a three from Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) to take the first lead of the game at 22-19 midway through the second.
  • NMSU hit a three of their own to retake the lead 24-22 with under five to play in the half.
  • A turnover led to a fast break Aggie basket for a short lived lead, as the Aggies headed into the break with 31-28 advantage.
  • Attacking the opposite basket, Rodriguez would tie it up again with a three to open the third quarter.
  • Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) was powerful in the paint, making the basket along with the foul to give WNMU a 34-33 edge just two minutes in.
  • Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) grabbed the offensive rebound and the basket to keep WNMU close.
  • In her hometown, Kaela Chavez (Las Cruces, New Mexico/Centennial High School) knocked down what would be 1-of-3, three pointers to put WNMU within three in the third.
  • NMSU opened the fourth with 14 unanswered points before a turnaround jumper from Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) went in for the first Mustang score of the quarter.
  • With the open shot, Chavez knocked down back-to-back threes to put the Mustangs over the double digit mark.
  • Despite holding the Aggies to a scoring drought for the last two and a half minutes, the Mustangs could not overcome the deficit, falling 75-56.
