Kowatch Scores Season High 17-Points in Road Win Over TAMUK

Kingsville, TX – Looking to close the season on a positive note, the Western Women's Basketball team used a big second quarter to propel them to a 53-43 victory at Texas A&M Kingsville Saturday afternoon. Falling down 19-9 after the first, WNMU scored 23-points, while holding the Javelinas to just five. Although the teams went back and forth outscoring each other, the second part of each half were in favor of the visiting Mustangs.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The home team shot off eight unanswered point to open play, before Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) knocked in a three to put WNMU on the board.
  • Add another three from Daria Vastrushkina, followed by a layup and free throw, the Mustangs were held to just nine points in the first quarter.
  • Quarter two was all WNMU, scoring a game high 23 points, while limiting the home team to just five points.
  • A last second shot from Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/), boosted WNMU to a 32-24 advantage at the half.
  • Despite being outscored 10-6 in the third, the Mustangs held on to a 38-34 lead going into the final quarter.
  • Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) connected at the foul line, immediately followed by a layup from Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) off the offensive rebound, gave WNMU the double-digit advantage.
  • TAMUK scored the final four points of the match, but WNMU held on to a ten point edge taking home a 53-43 win to close out the year.
  • Saturday's game snaps a four game losing streak for the Mustangs.
