Mustangs Left in the Dust at TAMIU

Silver City, N.M. – The western women's basketball team opened Thursdays game outscoring their opponent, breaking trend from previous starts. However, the Mustang offense fell quiet for the rest of the match, held to single digits in the third and forth frame to fall in game one of the weekend at Texas A&M International.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) – 14-points | 4 rebounds | 2 steals  
Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas)10-points | 3-6 3FG | 3 rebounds | 1 assist | 1 steal
Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) – 8-points | 11 rebounds | 2 assists | 1 block

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) started things off for WNMU scoring the first for points for the Mustangs.
  • Tied at 12 with two minutes in the opening quarter, Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) contributed her first three to take a 15-12 lead.
  • TAMIU put in one last layup before the buzzer but WNMU held the 15-14 lead going into the second.
  • It would be nearly three minutes in before Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) put in a fast break layup, followed by a three to retake a 20-19 lead.
  • TAMIU would go on a 13-2 run to close out the half, leading 36-25 at the break.
  • Dustdevils capitalized on a series of Mustang turnovers, putting up 23 points in the third, while holding the visitors to just nine points.
  • Quarter four followed a similar trend to the third as WNMU struggled to get an offense going giving up 21-points.
  • WNMU did win the battle of the boards, bringing down 32 to TAMIU's 24. 
 
UP NEXT:
The road trip continues for the western women, traveling two hours south to Texas A&M Kingsville for a Saturday afternoon match. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST.
