Sander's Free Throws Give WNMU Second Straight Win

Laredo, TX – On the road to close out 2019, the Western New Mexico Men's Basketball made it two straight, with a nail biting 70-69 win over Texas A&M International Thursday in Laredo. WNMU shot over forty percent in every category, including ten three pointers.  

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) – 12-points | 4 rebounds | 4 assists | 3-5 FG | 2-4 3FG
Rodney Simon (Boston, MA/Randolph ) – 7-points | 7 rebounds | 2 blocks | 3-4 FT
Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) – 13-points | 4-10 FG | 3-3 FT | 2 rebounds | 1 assist

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rodney Simon (Boston, MA/Randolph ) opened play grabbing the offensive rebound, and taking it in for the first basket of the game.
  • Doing what he does best, Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) shot back-to-back threes to keep his team ahead at 13-11.
  • From that point on, the Mustangs maintained the lead going up by as many as eight.
  • A layup by Ian Hohenstein (Veracruz, Mexico/Faith Christian Academy) push the lead to double-digits, holding a 39-29 edge at the half.
  • WNMU put in five threes in the second half, one of which at the hands of Nathan Pelissier (Paris, France /Lycre Albert Camus ) who pushed to Mustangs ahead by 15 and the 12-minute mark.
  • While WNMU fought to stay ahead, the Dustdevils inched their way back in with just three minutes left to play.
  • With 20 seconds left on the clock, TAMIU took the lead on a three.
  • Seconds later, Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) drew the foul on a three point attempt.
  • Headed to the line with the opportunity for the win, Sanders sank all three free throws to take the 70-69 lead.
  • TAMIU's last shot attempt fell short, giving WNMU their second win in a row.
UP NEXT:
Looking to build on their record, the Mustang men head to Texas A&M Kingsville Saturday for an afternoon clash with the Javelinas. Saturday's match with be the last of the year, with tip-off scheduled for 4 p.m. CST.
