Three Mustangs Finish in Double-Digits for First Season Win

Durango, CO – Western New Mexico women's basketball bounced back early this morning earning a 69-50 win over the Cowgirls of New Mexico Highlands. The Mustangs would outscore their opponents 24-11 in the final quarter to run away with their first win of the season.

Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)20 points | 11 rebounds | 6 assists | 4 steals | 8-12 FG | 4-4 FT
Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/)17 points | 5-12 FG | 4-6 3PT | 4 steals | 2 assists
Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/)10 points | 2 assists | 2 steals
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) got it started for the Mustangs, putting up a quick five points.
  • NMHU dropped in a last minute layup for a 12-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) would get the ball rolling in the second quarter with a fast break layup.
  • WNMU took the lead at 23-22 on a basket from Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School).
  • Despite grabbing a steal, NMHU could not knock down a last minute shot as WNMU led 31-28 going into halftime.
  • Out of the break, the Cowgirls got a quick layup to get within one.
  • NMHU would threaten to retake the lead but a three from Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) followed by a Mardis layup kept the distance.
  • Back-to-back threes from Kyanne Kowatch (Tularosa, NM/) gave way to the Mustangs largest lead at 20.
  • The Cowgirls got in one last shot, but the Mustangs 24 points in the final quarter was too much to overcome.

Women's Basketball will have some time off before playing host to Northern New Mexico in a mid-week matchup on Nov. 20 at 5:30 p.m. on Drag's Court.
