Mardis and Jackson Record Double-Doubles in Wednesday Night Victory

Silver City, N.M. – In a midweek match up with Northern New Mexico Wednesday evening, the Mustangs outscored their opponents in three of the four quarters to earn their second win of the young season 61-49.  

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - 13 points | 17 rebounds | 4-10 FG | 5-7 FT | 2 assists | 2 steals
Jayla Jackson (Killeen, TX/)11 points | 10 rebounds | 4-7 FG | 1 assist | 1 block
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) – 8 points | 3 rebounds | 4 assists | 1 block | 1 steal
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) would get things started with the offensive rebound and then the layup for the first score of the game.
  • A jumper from Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) gave WNMU an eight point lead.
  • Mardis put in one last layup to go up 13-8 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) grabbed the steal, and completed the possession with a fast break layup to go up by double-digits.
  • Both teams remained quiet till the last few minutes, but it was NNMC who got off the last shot of the half to trail 26-20 going into the break.
  • Mardis gave her team some breathing room with a steal and an and-one to go up by 11 in the third.
  • WNMU continued to build their lead throughout the third going up by as many as 17.
  • The first six points of the final quarter went to the Eagles, before a layup by Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) broke the run.
  • Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) sunk both free throws on a last minute foul to put WNMU over the 60-point mark and sealing the win.
UP NEXT:
The Mustang Women's Basketball team heads back on the road to Odessa, Texas to open conference play at UT Permian Basin. Tip-off is set for Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2 p.m. CST.
