Holifield Drops 24 In Game One of Conference Challenge

Durango, CO – Western New Mexico Men's Basketball traveled north to Durango, Colorado for the conference challenge, meeting up with the host Fort Lewis Skyhawks. After the Mustangs beat the Skyhawks in this tournament last year, FLC redeemed themselves with a 91-78 win Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Cyree Dunnell (Kansas City, MO/Manual Tech ) sank both free throws to get the scoring going nearly a minute into the game.
  • As FLC knocked down back-to-back three pointers, Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) caught fire tallying eight points within a span of two minutes to keep the game close.
  • WNMU would lead by as many as six in the first half.
  • A number of fouls on WNMU brought the Skyhawks to the foul line, giving way to a 47-44 advantage at the half.
  • As FLC started to pull away, Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) dropped back-to-back three pointers to put the team within one.
  • Midway through the second half, FLC would capitalize on WNMU turnovers building up to a double-digit lead.
  • Unable to close the difference, the Skyhawks outscored the Mustangs 44-34 in the second half to redeem last year's loss.

The Mustang men return to Whalen Gymnasium tomorrow for game two of the weekend, against defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Tournament Champions, New Mexico Highlands. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. MST.
