Second Half Surge Falls Short in Season Opener

Durango, CO – Rebounds proved to be the difference in Friday's season opener, as the Fort Lewis won the battle of the boards 47-30, 19 of which were offensive. Western outscored the Skyhawks 33-29 in the second half, but could not overcome the first quarter deficit, falling 62-59 in game one of the conference challenge.

Daria Vatrushkina (Moscow, Russia/) – 13 points | 5-12 FG | 2-2 FT | 2 rebounds
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) – 9 points | 3-6 3PT | 5 rebounds | 3 assists

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) accounted for seven of the Mustangs ten points in the first quarter.
  • The last two and half minutes were all Fort Lewis as the shot off six points in the paint to take a 16-10 edge going into the second quarter.
  • WNMU shot off three, three pointers in the final two minutes of the half including a buzzer beater from Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) to cut into the FLC lead at the half.
  • FLC took the largest lead of the game at 16 midway through the third.
  • A jumper from Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/), followed by back-to-back fouls drawn by Mardis brought the Mustangs back within four.
  • A layup by Daria Vatrushkina (Moscow, Russia/) put her team within one, the smallest deficit of the game.
  • With under a minute to play Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) sunk a three to put WNMU within three.
  • A last minute shot to tie the game bounced off the rim, and rebounded by FLC to seal the 62-59 win.

UP NEXT:
The Mustang women will look for their first win tomorrow morning against cross state rival New Mexico Highlands. Tip-off is set for 10 a.m. in Whalen Gymnasium.
