Sanders and Holifield Lead Mustang Offense in Game Two at NDNU Thanksgiving Tournament

Belmont, CA – In a game that saw 21 lead changes, the Mustang Men's Basketball team fell to Holy Names Saturday on day two of the NDNU Thanksgiving Tournament by a score of 84-79. WNMU shot 48.3 percent from the field, and dished out 17 assists and four blocks to lead those categories. The Mustang bench also contributed 35 points to the Holy Names 15.

Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) – 20-points | 8 rebounds | 2 blocks | 8-13 FG | 4-7 3PT
Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) – 19-points | 6-9 FG | 3-3 3PT | 4-4 FT | 2 assists | 3 rebounds
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The Hawks of Holy Names opened play with back-to-back three pointers, before Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) knocked in a jumper to put WNMU on the board.
  • The lead changes started early, with WNMU playing a game a catch up for most of the first half.
  • Nathan Pelissier (Paris, France /Lycre Albert Camus ) was key in bringing the team back into contention, giving them a 27-26 lead at the seven minute mark.
  • A HNU layup put them up 36-34, forcing a Mustang timeout with two minutes to play.
  • Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) knocked down a jump shot, followed by a layup from Ian Hohenstein (Veracruz, Mexico/Faith Christian Academy) and a last second basket from Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) to put the Mustangs up 40-36 at the half.
  • After the break, WNMU continued to hold the lead until five minutes in when a free throw put the Hawks up by one.
  • The teams battled it out until the two minute point when HNU started to pull away on a series of baskets.
  • Malik Sanders (Durham, NC/Smithfield-Selma ) sunk two from beyond the arc, but as time ran out the Mustangs could not close the deficit.
UP NEXT:
After playing nine games on the road to open the season, the Mustangs return to the friendly confines of Drag's Court to continue conference play, taking on the Cameron Aggies Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. for a single game. WNMU will then host MSU Texas Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. before taking a break for the Christmas holiday.
