Mustangs Drop Close Contest to Cameron

Silver City, N.M. –Western could not get a call in their favor as the Mustangs found themselves in foul key players in foul trouble Saturday evening against the visiting Cameron Aggies. CU won the battle of the boards, but WNMU would snag 10 steals on the night. WNMU shot 36.7 percent from the field, and 63.6 percent from the foul line.

Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) – 18-points | 4-9 3 PT | 2-2 FT | 1 assist
Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) – 6-points | 3 assists | 2 steals

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Behind a series of points from Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy), the Mustangs went up 10-6 early in the first.
  • A made jumper from Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) put WNMU up by 10, just under the ten minute mark.
  • Fouls against the Mustangs brought the Aggies to the foul line, slowly closing the gap.
  • A Mustang turnover, turned into a three from CU giving them a single point lead at the break.
  • The teams traded leads for the first seven minutes of the match, before both would go silent for a few minutes midway through.
  • Calm under pressure, Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) knocked down back-to-back three, one of which drew a foul to put his team up by four.
  • CUs leading scorer came alive in the last few minutes, sinking basket after basket to put CU up by five with just under a minute to play.
  • The Aggies held on to the lead, taking away a 65-59 win.
