Men's Basketball Travel West for NDNU Thanksgiving Tournament

Belmont, CA – Western New Mexico Men's Basketball step out of conference play, as they head west to Belmont, California for the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Tournament hosted by the Argos. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, the Mustangs will face PacWest Conference members Notre Dame de Namur and Holy Names University Friday and Saturday.

  LAST TIME OUT:
The Mustangs opened conference play on the road against UT Permian Basin last Saturday in Odessa. Projected to finish eighth in the LSC Preseason Poll, the Mustangs took the Falcons into extra minutes, before being outscored 16-9 in overtime to fall 104-97.
A late scoring run put WNMU up 50-42 going into the half. In the second, a last minute free throw tied it up at 88, before a last minute Mustang basket failed to fall, forcing it to overtime.

Eddie Giron (Monterrey, Mexico/Harmony Science Academy) led the Mustang offense with 20-points, shooting 7-13 from the field, and 6-7 from the free throw line. Giron also led with nine boards, just shy of a double-double. Sophomore guard, Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) added 19-points of his own shooting 50-percent from the field, along with four rebounds, and four assists.

Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) notched 18-points for WNMU, followed by Rodney Simon (Boston, MA/Randolph ) (10) and Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) (10) who rounded out the Mustangs in double-digit scoring.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
Notre Dame de Namur Argos (0-4)
After opening the season with an exhibition against CSU Bakersfield, the Argos dropped two in Oakland, CA to Stanislaus State and Cal State East Bay. Over the past week, NDNU played their second exhibition against Santa Clara before heading to the PNQ, suffering losses to Western Oregon and 70-71 heartbreaker to Concordia Portland.
Sophomore guard, Trevor Thompson sits atop the Argos leader board averaging 17.8 points per game. Thompsons 16, three-pointers lead the team shooting 44.4 percent from deep. Junior forward, Ajay Singh adds a 16.5 ppg average, shooting 48.3 from the field including 33 rebounds to average 8.3 a game.

Holy Names University Hawks (1-3)
In the Spirit of Sisters Conference Challenge, the Hawks both matches to the same opponents as NDNU. Riding a three game losing streak, HNU claimed their first victory over Cal State Monterey Bay, 75-65 on Nov. 19 in Tobin Gymnasium.
The Hawks offense is led by freshman guard, Justin Chambers. Chambers currently shoots 52.8 percent from the field to average 14.5 points per game, second on the team with six three-pointers on the season.
Teammate, sophomore forward Cameron Fini is second on the team in scoring, averaging 13.0 points per game, while also leading the defensive efforts with 30.0 rebounds. Fini is 45.7 percent from the field, and 78.9 percent from the foul line.
