Women's Basketball Bounce Back with 89-59 Win

Alpine, TX – With a day off in between matches, the Western New Mexico women's basketball team bounced back with a dominant 89-59 victory over Sul Ross State in Alpine, Texas Monday night. Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) and Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) led the way with 18 and 17 points respectively, as the Mustangs outscored their opponents in every quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • A series of Mustang turnovers gave way to a Lobos lead, 8-4.
  • Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) knocked down a three to put WNMU within one, followed by a block from Jayla Jackson (Killeen, TX/) that led to a fast break layup by Abigail Walter (Fort Worth, TX/Nolan Catholic HS) to go up 9-8.
  • Walter took matters into her own hands, putting the team up 12-8 under the four minute mark.
  • A Lobos free throw tied it at 15 but Taylor Allison (Little Elm, Texas/Denton High School) sunk a free throw of her own for a 16-15 lead going into the second quarter.
  • It was a back and forth contest till about the five minute mark, when WNMU pulled away and took their largest lead at 42-34 at the break.
  • Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) added another three to put her team up by double-digits at 47-36.
  • The Mustangs scored 28 points to the Lobos 13 in the third.
  • Up by more than 20 headed into the final frame, the Mustangs would not let up continuing to build their lead.
  • The Lobos got in the last shot, but WNMU would run away with the 89-59 victory to improve to 3-2 on the young season.
UP NEXT:
The Mustangs will take the rest of the week off for the holiday, before taking on Division I New Mexico State on December 4 in Las Cruces. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. MST.
