Third Quarter Trips up Mustangs on the Road

Odessa, TX – In their conference opener, the Western New Mexico women's basketball team suffered a third quarter slump and were unable to recover as they fell to the Falcons 73-54 Saturday afternoon at the UTPB Gym Complex.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) – 10-points | 5 rebounds | 1 block | 5 steals
Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy)6-points | 3 assists | 2 steals
Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) – 8-points | 6 rebounds | 1 steal | 1 assist  
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Paulina Rodriguez (Chihuahua, Mexico/Montverde Academy) started things off with a three nearly seconds into the game.
  • UTPB led by as many as 5 in the opening frame, but a layup from Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) matched the teams at 14.
  • Alicia Mardis (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) put a last minute layup in to take a 17-14 lead going into quarter two.
  • Up until the five minute mark, the teams traded leads.
  • A series of free throws and points in the paint gave way to UTPB maintaining a lead.
  • Alexis Jones (Dallas, TX/) was brought to the foul line, sinking both free throws to go into the locker rooms trailing by a point at the half.
  • The third quarter is where the game took a turn for the Mustangs.
  • UTPB went on a 15-3 scoring run, which eventually turned into a 24-point quarter while holding WNMU to just eight points.
  • In the final frame, WNMU kept the scoring close but could not overcome the third quarter deficit.
  • Turnovers played a factor as well, as the Mustangs committed 34 to the Falcons 22.

The Mustang Women's Basketball team remains on the road, stepping out of conference and Division II opponents to take on Sul Ross State November 25, in Alpine, Texas. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. CST.
