Multiple Mustangs in Double-Digit Scoring in Conference Overtime Thriller

Odessa, TX – In their first game under new leadership, and the conference opener, the Mustangs jumped out to a hot start, but fell in overtime to the UTPB Falcons Saturday afternoon in Odessa. Multiple Mustangs finished in double-digits, along with leading the game in assists and steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After opening the game on a UTPB dunk, Tony Avalos (Las Cruces, NM/Onate) quickly responded with a layup on the opposite end of the court for the Mustangs first bucket.
  • Midway through the first half, Amarion Cash (Phoenix, AZ/Mountain Pointe) drained a three, followed by a three from Andrew Leonard (Tucson, AZ /Cienega ) to give WNMU their first lead of the game at 23-22.
  • Another three, this time by CJ Vanbeekum (Phoenix, AZ/Paradise) gave way to a series of points in favor of the Mustangs to hold on to the lead.
  • With their largest lead, Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) added to the three pointers to put WNMU up by eight heading into the break.
  • Mustangs led throughout most of the second half, but the last few minutes proved to be exciting as the teams traded baskets.
  • Elijah Holifield (Atlanta, GA/Pace Academy) sunk both free throws to go up 88-87 with thirty seconds remaining.
  • A foul put UTPB at the foul line, with a missed first but second made to tie the game at 88 at the end of regulation.
  • UTPB carried momentum going into the overtime period, outscoring WNMU 16-9 on the way to a 104-97 win.
UP NEXT:
Western New Mexico Men's Basketball steps out of conference play, traveling west to Belmont, California for the Notre Dame de Namur Thanksgiving Tournament Nov. 29-30. There the Mustangs will match up with host NDNU and Holy Names University –California.
