WNMU Tests Tarleton in Four-Set Loss

Silver City, N.M. – Three out of the four sets played were determined by just two points, as the Mustangs made the visiting Texans of Tarleton earn their win Saturday on Drag's Court.

TOP PERFORMERS:
Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School)17 kills | 12 digs | .222
Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School)14 kills | 10 digs | .244
Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) – 29 assists | 3 service aces
Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School)16 digs | 4 assists
Delaney Seitz (Hillsboro, OR/Century High School) 5 block assists | 9 kills
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Tarleton got off to a hot start, before Western tied it up at 10 on a kill from Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School).
  • Augustine rallied off four kills late to put her team at set point, before a kill from Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) gave the opening set to the Mustangs in exciting fashion.
  • Set two witness the teams trade points, and leads throughout.
  • A WNMU attack error set up a 23-20 advantage for the Texans.
  • The refuse to lose mentality would fuel the Mustang to pull within one, but a TSU kill tied the match at a set a piece.
  • TSU built a comfortable lead in the third set, but got too comfortable creating unforced errors to let WNMU back in.
  • Despite two kills from Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School), TSU finished it out on a kill for a 2-0 lead in the match and what would be the only set decided by more than two points.
  • Similar to Thursday, Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) put the pressure on behind the service line giving her team a 17-12 lead in the fourth.
  • Tarleton however would come up with series of points, ultimately taking the set and match.
UP NEXT:
For their final road trip of the season, WNMU heads to Cameron and UAFS for the final two conference matches outside of their division. They will then return home to close out the season against West Texas A&M Nov. 14, and Eastern New Mexico Nov. 16 for senior night.
