HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Adrenaline pumping, the Mustangs would strike first in their opening drive, capping off a 10-play, 74-yard drive to score on a 26-yard pass from CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) to Josh Powell.
  • In true Tarleton fashion, the Texans immediately answered in their first play with a 75-yard pass to Zimari Manning to tie the game.
  • Iganacio Correa would be the team up 10-3 on a 28-yard field goal heading into the second quarter with the advantage.
  • TSU would take their first lead of the game on a short rush early in the second.
  • The defense on both teams would force the other to punt thereafter.
  • Senior, James Lee (Bayard, NM/Cobre) would come up big with a sack, forcing the fumble which would be recovered by Kaleb Gutierrez (El Paso, TX/Franklin HS) taking it all the way for a Mustang score and the 17-14 lead going into the break.
  • A few drives in, TSU's Bailey would be in the right place at the right time, catch the ricochet off a WNMU deflection, taking it to the end zone for a TSU touchdown.
  • The Texans would score again in their following possession to create a gap.
  • In the fourth, a TSU penalty put WNMU within 15-yards of the end zone, as CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) would find Josh Powell once again to close the gap to 27-24.
  • Ben Holmes of TSU would run the same route as the he did in the opening quarter, finding none other than Manning to pull away.
  • Tarleton would score once more in fourth en route to a 41-24 victory, and the outright Lone Star Conference title.
