Mustang's Relentless Defense Tests West Texas

Silver City, N.M – In a battle to prove who was the "Best of the Wests", the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M had to battle it out with a relentless Mustang defense to take the match in four sets.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The teams were neck and neck throughout the opening set, before a kill from Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School) kick started a 7-0 scoring run.
  • Behind the service line, Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) aided in the Mustangs first set win.
  • WNMU hit .394 as a team to take the set win.
  • WT built a 5-1 lead to start the second set.
  • With a 17-11 lead, WT would commit a series of attack errors to bring WNMU within one.
  • Another WT attack error gave the Mustangs a 21-20 edge.
  • Tied at 23, the WT offense claimed the final two points to tie the match.
  • Selena Batiste was consistent for her team, with one of her 18 kills ending the third set.
  • WNMU led by as many as five in the fourth, but allowed WT to get within one on unforced errors.
  • Despite leading majority of the set, the Lady Buffs block capped off the comeback to take the set and match, 25-23.
UP NEXT:
The Mustangs close out their season with a rivalry match against Eastern New Mexico Saturday for Senior Night. Eight seniors will be recognized prior to first serve at 6 p.m.
