Final Night Game Features Javelinas of Texas A&M Kingsville

Silver City, N.M. – With only three games left in the season, the Western New Mexico football team returns to comfort of the Ben Altamirano Field this Saturday. The Javelinas of Texas A&M – Kingsville enter the gridiron for the final game under the lights this season.

A LOOK BACK:
  • Last season the Mustangs made the trek to Kingsville.
  • WNMU scored twice in both the first and fourth quarters, but fell just shy 37-34.
  • DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) rushed for 200-yards for three touchdowns in the loss.
  • WNMU has traveled to Kingsville three out of the four times the two teams have met. The lone game played in Silver City, WNMU claimed a 35-23 victory.
  • The very first meeting ever between the two teams, dates all the way back to Oct. 16, 1976. TAMUK was dominant in a 63-2 win, which has been the largest margin overall in the series.
LAST TIME OUT:
  • The No. 23 ranked Lions of Texas A&M Commerce claimed a 62-21 win over the Mustangs last weekend in Commerce, Texas on Homecoming.
  • CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) threw for 315-yards and three touchdowns.
  • Josh Powell led the air attack with seven receptions for 214-yards and two touchdowns.
  • Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) added four receptions of his own, for 52-yards and two touchdowns.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT:
  • The Javelinas boast a similar record to the Mustangs, entering the gridiron with a 1-7 record overall, but have yet to win a game in league play.
  • Their lone win came against Sul Ross State back in September in a complete 72-0 shutout.
  • TAMUK racked up 600-yards of offense in the win.
  • Going up against the No. 4/5 Texans of Tarleton last weekend, the Javelinas held their own dropping a 45-33 decision at home.
  • Senior quarterback, Koy Detmer Jr. threw for 450-yards on 37-of-65 for three scores.
  • Darrian Hambrick was the go-to receiver with 12 grabs for 151-yards and a touchdown.
  • On the defensive side of the ball, Josh Wilson tallied nine solo tackles.
  • Tre'Michael Tutt leads the team with 86 tackles, on top of 8.0 tackles for a loss of 18-yards.
FLIGHT FOWLER:
  • Junior quarterback, CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) remains at the top of the conference in passing yards with 2,162 and 14 touchdowns.
  • With 163 completions in 307 attempts, puts him at a 53.1 efficiency.
  • Nationally, his offensive efforts are the 13th highest in Division II.
  • His 315-yards vs. TAMUC marked his third consecutive game surpassing the 300-mark. His 383-yards versus Central Washington remains a season best.
RECEPTION CORE:
  • Junior wide receiver Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) has connected 46 times this season to lead the team.
  • His 740-yards, and nine touchdowns rank 18th and 14th respectively in Division II.
  • Freshman Josh Powell continues to make a statement in his first season as a Mustang.
  • With 34 grabs on the season, for 630-yards, he posted a season best 214-yards at Texas A&M Commerce.
  • His 99-yard kick return against Eastern New Mexico was a career first, and his fourth touchdown of the season.
  • Issac Crichton adds 264-yards of his own, with 20 receptions.
DEFENSIVELY SPEAKING:
  • Senior Roosevelt Calhoun Jr. (Reno, NV/Hug HS) not only leads the team with 91 tackles, but his 58 solo tackles leads all of Division II.
  • Prior to last weekend, Calhoun Jr. had forced a fumble in every game dating back to Oct. 5 when recorded two in the win over UTPB.
  • His four forced fumbles on the season are fourth most in Division II.
