Volleyball Downs DBU in First Match of the Weekend

Silver City, N.M. – The Western New Mexico volleyball team rallied from behind, and fought till the last point, taking a three set win over the visiting Patriots of Dallas Baptist Thursday night on Drag's Court. The Mustangs registered seven service aces in the win, along with 14 block assists in the win, outscoring their opponents 76-64.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • WNMU jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the opening set.
  • A Mustang attack error gave the Patriots their first lead, but was short lived after a service error tied the game at 13.
  • Back-to-back blocks and a service ace put the Mustangs back on top with a 19-15 edge.
  • DBU errors gave WNMU set one, 25-17.
  • Set two saw DBU jump out to an early lead behind multiple WNMU errors.
  • Down 16-22, Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) kicked off what would become a 10-2 run by the Mustangs to force the set into extra points.
  • An ace from Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School), followed by a DBU attack error put the teams tied at 24.
  • Another DBU attack error gave WNMU the lead at 25-24, before Culp's second ace closed out the exciting set 26-24.
  • Set three the teams traded points throughout, up until the twenties.
  • Pressure behind the service line was a key factor in helping push the Mustangs to the finish, winning the third and final set 25-23.
