Football Looks to Continue Winning Ways on the Road at Angelo State

San Angelo, Tex. – After a statement win over UT Permian Basin last weekend, the Western New Mexico University football team heads to Angelo State looking add another win to their record. The Rams will host the Mustangs for their Homecoming game this Saturday at Legrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. CDT
 
MUSTANGS TO WATCH:
  • CJ Fowler (Mesa, AZ/Desert Ridge HS) was 16-of-30 for 198-yards and three touchdowns against the Falcons last weekend.
    • On the season, Fowler has accumulated 1,365-yards on 111 completions for nine touchdowns.
    • His efforts lead the Lone Star Conference with a 56.1 passing efficiency, averaging 273-yards a game.
  • Reggie Colson III (Hollywood, FL/South Borward HS) leads the team with 35 receptions for 507-yards and five touchdowns.
    • The junior wide receiver, averages 101.4-yards a game so far this season, ranking him second in the conference.
  • Guiding the attack on the ground is senior running back, DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet)
    • Williams has 61 carries on the season, racking up 350-yards in four games, for an average of 87.5-yards a game with three touchdowns.
  • Assisting Williams, is fellow senior running back Vincent Brown (Los Angeles, CA/Artesia).
    • Brown has been key for the Mustang offense, finishing in the red-zone for six touchdowns on 48 carries and 134-yards.
  • Senior linebacker Roosevelt Calhoun Jr. (Reno, NV/Hug HS) went off against UTPB, racking up 10 solo tackles, two sacks for a loss of 11-yards, two forced fumbles, and an interception.
    • Calhoun ranks 4th in the LSC with 37 solo tackles, 20 assists, averaging 11.4 tackles a game.
  • James Lee (Bayard, NM/Cobre) continues to make big plays on defense, second on the team with 38 tackles on top of five quarterback hurries and a forced fumble.
    • His four sacks this season are the third most in the LSC.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS:
Angelo State Rams (4-1, 2-1 LSC)
  • ASU were picked to finish fifth in the LSC Preseason Poll
  • Head Coach Jeff Girsch is in his first season at the helm of Ram football, after serving as the defensive coordinator.
  • In 2018, the Rams visited Silver City taking home a shut out 52-0 victory over the Mustangs.
  • This will be the fifth overall meeting between the two teams, in which ASU holds a 2-1 edge.
    • WNMU was victorious back in 2016, with a 20-14 victory over ASU in Silver City.
  • The Rams are currently 3-0 at home, and up until last weekend were riding a four game winning streak. #4 Tarleton snapped that streak in Stephenville with a 30-13 win over ASU.
    • ASU opened conference play with a 44-7 win over Texas A&M Kingsville, and took that momentum into the second weekend, defeating then No.15 ranked MSU Texas.
  • Lloyd Howards picked up 160 all-purpose yards, 133 rushing yards on 21 carries in last weekends loss. Howard ranks fifth in the LSC in all-purpose yards, with five rushing touchdowns, 470- yards on the ground, nearly averaging 100.0-yards a game.
  • Through the air, Keke Chism is third in the conference with 459-yards, averaging 91.5 yards a game.
  • WNMU will face a familiar name, in former head coach Adam Clark who joined the Rams coaching staff recently, taking over as the defensive coordinator.
    • The Rams defense sits atop the conference allowing just 10 touchdowns, and an average of 14.0 a game for opponents.
