Lady Mustangs Unable to Stop Top-Ranked West Texas

Silver City, N.M—The top-ranked West Texas Lady Buffs proved to be too much for the Lady Mustangs as they fell 64-49, dropping to 1-2 in conference play.

The teams kept it close, with WT taking a one-point advantage through one quarter. WT ran away in the second out-scoring Western 20-7, going into the break with a substantial lead. Offensively, Western struggled in the second going 3-for-13 from the field, and 1-of-4 from  beyond the arc.

After the break, WT continued to build on their lead holding Western to single digit scoring. The fourth was all Western though, as they out-scored WT 24-16. Despite a fourth quarter scoring run, Western was unable to close the gap as time ran out.

The third ranked Lady Buffs shot 26-of-58 (44.8%) from the field compared to the 19-of-65 (29.2%) by Western. Defensively, Western struggled to get past the height of WT who recorded 12 blocks, seven of which came from Tyesha Taylor.

Sophomore, Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) drained 14 points on 6-13 shooting, and grabbed seven rebounds. Sara Lopez (El Paso, Texas/Horizon High School) followed up with 12 points and two rebounds.
Western hits the road next week to take on Cameron (1/10) and Midwestern State (1/12). Games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. against Cameron, and 2 p.m. against Midwestern State.
