Lady Mustangs Face Off with UT - Permian Basin

Silver City, N.M – The Lady Mustangs return home this week for the second round of conference play, meeting up with UT – Permian Basin and Texas Woman's. This will be the second time these teams meet up this season, with their first match up back in late November, early December.

LAST TIME OUT:

The Lady Mustangs (6-11, 2-8 LSC) went head to head with Texas A&M – Commerce and Tarleton State last weekend on the road.
In a match up that saw three Mustangs finish in double-digits, Western ultimately fell to the Lions 73-60. Western missed more than half of their shots at the free throw line and were outscored 43-36 in the second half. Western shot 43.4 percent from the field, 26.7 percent from deep, and 45.5 percent from the foul line.
Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) led her team with 15 points, finishing in double-digits in four of the last six games. Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) followed up with 14 points of her own, bringing her average to 11.0 points per game. Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) led on the defensive end grabbing 10 boards in the loss.
Saturday featured another top matchup for the Lady Mustangs, going up against Tarleton State. The TexAnns who are now 13-5 overall, earned their thirteenth win defeating Western 66-52.
Tarleton was hot out of the gates, taking a 16-5 lead through one quarter of play. Despite out-scoring the home team in the second and fourth quarters, the deficit was too much to overcome. Newcomer, Kayla Clark (Mesa, Arizona/Dobson High School) came up with 11 points to lead the Mustangs, followed by Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School) with nine.

SCOUTING THE FALCONS:
As a team the women are shooting 35.2 percent from the floor, 26.6 percent from beyond the arc and 70.5 percent from the free throw line. On the defensive end they have 174 steals on the season, averaging 9.7 per game on top of their 2.1 blocked shots.

Individually, senior guard Khali Pippins-Tyron lead her team with 220 points, averaging 12.2 a game, with a 31.1 field goal percentage. Khali does it beyond the perimeter as well, hitting 31.3 percent of her shots with 25 made this season. Teammate, Juliette Akinwole grabs 5.6 rebounds a game for her team, and averages 0.4 blocks per game.

HISTORY VERSUS THE FALCONS:

The two teams met up back on 8^th of December, with Western coming out on top 61-41 for their first conference win on the season. Since then, the Falcons have yet to earn a conference win, and stand 3-15 overall. Their last win came against Texas A&M – International back on Dec. 29^th.

The win on December 8^th was the first time Western defeated UT – Permian Basin since joining the Lone Star Conference.

LOOKING AHEAD:
Despite a drought, the Mustang women have the tools they need going in to the second round of conference play, facing off against familiar foes. Coming in at #20 in the LSC Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) has found her rhythm scoring 11.0 points per game with 67 made field goals so far, averaging 4.2 a game.
Through the last four games, Vickery has finished in double-digits three times with a season high 23 points against Texas A&M – Kingsville.
Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) continues to produce on the defensive end, grabbing 8.8 boards per game.
