Football Comes Up Short Against West Texas


 
Silver City, N.M—The Mustang football team kicked off their conference portion of the season this past Saturday when they took on the Buffs of West Texas A&M.
The Buffs came in 0-1 in the conference having played Tarleton State the previous week, dropping that matchup 44-7.
This game was the first conference game for the Mustangs, coming off a bye for week one, and playing two Division I teams in the weeks prior.

GAME RECAP:
West Texas would strike first, scoring on a 10 yard run by Duke Carter IV with 0.29 left in the first quarter.

Ignacio Correa (Midland, TX/Midland), would step in early in the second quarter to get the Mustangs rolling on a 20-yard field goal.

WT's Michael Shipley increased the Buffs score by three, connecting on a 30 yard field goal with 5:55 remaining in the second quarter. Tobias Harris went on to score on a pick six with just over a minute left in the half. The Buffs led 17-3 going into the break.

Kourde Roberts (North Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) connected on a 21-yard pass from Blake Armstrong to decrease the lead to seven, with 7:01 left in the third quarter.

WT would answer with a 48-yard field goal, to lead 20-10 going into the fourth quarter. WT's third and final touchdown came on a 8-yard pass to Brock Williams.

Roberts got the stadium going on a 77-yard pass by Armstrong with just under nine minutes left in the game.

In one last attempt to score, the Mustangs missed a field goal wide with six minutes left.  The Buffs went on the take the game by a score of 27-17, giving them their second win of the season, first in conference play.

The Mustangs drop to 0-3 on the season, 0-1 in conference play. Football hits the road again to take on University of Texas – Permian Basin at their place. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. (MT) on Saturday, Sept. 29.
