Softball Tallies 14 Hits Friday Against #15 West Texas A&M

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The offense was piling up hits for the Western New Mexico University softball team, as the Lady Mustangs put up 10 hits alone in the second game. No. 15 West Texas A&M showed why their one of the top teams in the nation as they answered with 26 runs to take the doubleheader by scores of 12-2 and 14-3 in five innings in Lone Star Conference action Friday afternoon.

The long ball powered West Texas A&M (17-3, 4-1 LSC) as they hit 10 on the day, with six coming in game two. Junior Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) launched her own home run in the second game, her second round tripper of the year.

In the first game, WNMU (1-22, 0-11 LSC) collected runs in the first and fourth innings. WT started off strong as they scored six runs in the first inning. In the home half, Maldonado got things going with a one out double. After senior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) singled up the middle to put runners at the corners, redshirt freshman Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) collected the RBI on a fielder's choice groundout to shortstop.

The Lady Buffs had another big inning in the third when they scored five. They added their last run in the fourth to move out to a 12-1 advantage. In the home half of the fourth, Habiztreuther took a 1-0 pitch a ripped a double to left-center. Freshman Alexis Gonzalez (Phoenix, AZ/Deer Valley) walked and then redshirt sophomore Clarissa Moreno (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) was hit-by-pitch to load the bases. Junior Deidre Vega (Bayard, NM/Cobre) followed and she was also hit-by-pitch to pick-up the RBI. Kilee Halbert then settled down in the circle for WT as she got a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.

Maldonado, Garcia, Habitzreuther and Moreno all recorded hits for WNMU. Habtizreuther and Vega tallied RBI. Ashley Hardin posted three hits to pace the Lady Buffs, while Kourtney Coveney drove in three runs. They had six others players with at least two hits and two others with at least two runs batted in.

In the circle, sophomore Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) went all five innings for WNMU and ended up with the loss (1-10). Halbert also went the distance for the Lady Buffs to claim her ninth (9-2) win of the year.

In game two, the teams combined for 25 hits with WT holding the slight 15-10 advantage. The Lady Buffs once again opened the scoring in the first with a pair of runs, with the last one scoring on an error. In the home half, WNMU threatened when Maldonado and Garcia singled, but then a lineout and strikeout ended the frame.

WT added three more in the second on a three-run home run by Kylee Moore. Just like the first, WNMU looked to answer right back when Vega singled and stole second in front of a single to center by senior Aryana Gutierrez (Glendale, AZ/Deer Valley). With runners at the corners, a strikeout left the runners stranded.

After a pair of solo home runs by WT in the third moved the lead to 7-0, WNMU got on the board in the home half. Maldonado opened the inning and drilled a solo shot over the right-center field fence. Garcia added a singled and after eventually moving to third, she scored on a single to right by junior Carolyn Castillo (Silver City, NM/Silver City). Vega then walked to load the bases before a fly out ended the inning with WT in front 7-2.

WT moved out to a 12-2 lead after plating five runs on six hits in the fourth. After they added two more in the fifth, WNMU put the final run on the board in the home half. Habitzreuther was hit-by-pitch for a conference-leading 12th time this season to open the frame. Moreno and Gonzales followed with singles, as Gonzalez's hit brought home Habitzreuther. Three straight outs followed to end the game with WT taking the 14-3 victory.

Maldonado and Garcia each posted two hits to lead WNMU. Maldonado, Gonzalez and Castillo all drove in a run. Moore went 4-4 for WT with four runs scored and five RBI, all on a pair of home runs. Suka Van Gurp added three hits and two others had two hits. Stevie McLemore drove in four as she also hit a pair of home runs.

In the circle, sophomore Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) went all five innings for WNMU and ended up with the loss (0-8). Shayne Starkey started for WT and went the first three innings to claim the win (7-0) giving up two earned runs. McLemore went the final two innings and allowed a run.

The teams will finish their four-game series on Saturday starting at noon with another doubleheader. The first game will count as a LSC contest, while the second game will be a non-conference regional game.
