WNMU vs. Angelo State Box Score

SILVER CITY, N.M. –
Klara Smolikova (Czech Republic) is off to a 2-0 start to the Lone Star Conference season as she added another singles victory against Angelo State. The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team hung tough in several singles matches and claimed a doubles point, but the Belles were too strong and claimed the 7-2 conference win Saturday.

WNMU (2-13, 0-2 LSC) used a tough battle from Kaycie Cormier
/Christine Roerick (Albuquerque, NM/La Cueva) at No. 3 doubles to pick up a point, as they went back-and-forth before converting a late break for the 8-6 win. Angelo State (13-5, 2-1 LSC) rallied at the top two doubles spots to take a 2-1 lead as Smolikova/Jeanne Kolb (La Couronne, France/Lycée de l'Image et du Son) at the top flight and Karina Diaz (Laredo, TX/United)/Nadia Justiniano (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Santa Cruz International School) at No. 2 each won three games in their matches before falling by the same scores of 3-8.

Entering singles play, Smolikova went three sets to pick up the win at the top flight. She cruised to a 6-2 win in the opening set and after dropping the second set 4-6, she won the super tiebreaker in the third, 10-7. Kolb also won her first set 6-3 at No. 3, but then dropped the next two sets, 3-6, 5-10. Justiniano at No. 2 played a pair of tough sets, but wasn't able to pick up a set in falling, 4-6, 5-7. Roerick at No. 5 and Cormier at No. 6 each won five games and fell by the same scores of 3-6, 2-6. Diaz was defeated at No. 4, 0-6, 0-6.

The Lady Mustangs will now hit the road to face a pair of nationally ranked conference opponents in Cameron on Friday and then Midwestern State on Saturday, before closing the trip with a non-conference regional match against St. Mary's that will take place in Wichita Falls on Sunday.
