Women’s Tennis Defeats Eastern Arizona in First Home Match of Spring

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Having faced Division I UTEP in an exhibition a few weeks ago, the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team was able to kick-off the regular season Wednesday as they defeated Eastern Arizona 5-4.

In doubles, WNMU took two of three. Jeanne Kolb (La Couroone, France/Lycée de l'Image et du Son)/Klara Smolikova cruised to a solid 8-3 win at No. 2. Christine Roerick/Kaycie Cormier fought off a tough challenge at No. 3 before claiming the 8-5 win. Nadia Justiniano (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Santa Cruz International School)/Karina Diaz (Laredo, TX/United) won five games, but fell just short 5-8 at the top flight.

In singles, WNMU won at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 6 to pick up the victory. Kolb at No. 4 rolled to her win as she didn't drop a game in posting the 6-0, 6-0 win. Cormier added to that a strong win at No. 6 as she won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. Diaz rebounded from a 4-6 loss in the first set, to win the next two sets, 6-3, 10-6 at No. 3. Roerick did all she could to pull out the win at No. 5 as she won the first set, 6-4 and then went into a marathon tiebreaker in the second set, before falling just short, 6-7 (8). In the final set, she fell in the super tiebreaker, 3-10. Smolikova at No. 2 lost in straight sets, but she made it anything but easy as after a 3-6 setback in the first set, she went into a tiebreaker in the second before coming up just short, 6-7 (4). In the final singles match of the day, Justiniano won five games in the first set in her top flight match before a 5-7, 1-6 loss.

WNMU will return to action on Feb. 22-25 when they will compete in the Firestorm Classic that will take place in Phoenix. They will face Mesa CC, Sonoma State, Arizona Christian, Holy Names, Colorado Mesa and St. Edward's.
