#5 Angelo State Uses Pair of Strong Pitching Performances to Get Past Softball

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Finding a baserunner, whether via a hit, walk, hit-by-pitch or otherwise was a difficult task for the Western New Mexico University softball team against No. 5 Angelo State on Saturday. The Belles got a pair of dominant pitching performances, first by Brandy Marlett as she tossed a no-hitter in six innings and allowed just two walks. While in the second game, Morgan Hill allowed just a hit and one hit-by-pitch in five innings that led to the Belles taking both games by the same scores of 8-0 in run-rule Lone Star Conference victories.

Marlett, the LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year, struckout 10 and allowed just two walks in no-hitting the Lady Mustangs (1-14, 0-5 LSC) and picking up her fifth (5-0) win of the year. Both walks allowed by Marlett came in the fourth inning. Junior Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) opened the inning working a full-count walk and then after an out, senior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) added a five-pitch walk. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners up, a strikeout ended the threat.

While Marlett kept the Lady Mustangs off the base paths, the Angelo State (15-1, 5-0 LSC) offense posted all the runs they would need in the first inning. The Belles scored five runs on five hits to take a 5-0 lead after one. They added two more in the second and then Rocha hit a walk-off solo home run to begin the sixth inning to give Angelo State the 8-0 run-rule victory.

Wallace, Rocha and Kirk all had two hits to lead Angelo State, with Rocha and Kirk driving in three runs apiece.

Sophomore Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) started for WNMU and ended up with the loss (1-7) after going one inning and allowing five earned runs. Sophomore Thalia O'Neill (Bloomfield, NM/Bloomfield) did a solid job in relief allowing just three earned runs in four innings of work.

The second game had a similar feel, as Hill allowed just two baserunners in picking up her ninth (9-1) win of the season for Angelo State.

One of the baserunners came in the second when freshman Grisdey Paredes-Alvarez was hit-by-pitch. A pop out and strikeout followed to end the inning. The other runner came in the fourth when Garcia singled on a 1-0 pitch to right. She later moved to second on a wild pitch before a strikeout and pop out ended the inning.

Angelo State brought the offense late in the game, as they had a 1-0 lead entering the third inning following a solo home run in the first. They would then add three in the third and then two runs each in the fourth and fifth for the run-rule win. Bina posted the walk-off for the Belles as she was hit-by-pitch with the bases-loaded.

Greenwell and Strother posted two hits apiece to lead Angelo State, while Greenwell, Wallace and Stroud drove in two runs each.

Redshirt freshman Alicia Habitzreuther (Sierra Vista, AZ/Buena) started in the circle for the Lady Mustangs and ended up with the loss (0-1) as she went all four innings and allowed eight earned runs.

WNMU will conclude their series with Angelo State tomorrow (Sunday) with another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Mountain Time. The first game will be a conference contest, while the second game will be a non-conference, regional contest.
