Strong Offense Leads to Fifth Victory for the Lady Mustangs

Box Score Silver City, NM—By an identical score from their last victory, the Lady Mustang bring their winning streak to two, defeating Sul Ross State 63-53 Sunday afternoon.

Despite the break, Western didn't skip a beat. After a slow start, the offensive output picked up and gave the Mustangs a 16-6 advantage going into the second quarter. The quarter started off with a layup by Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado), and the scoring only picked up from there.

Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) went on a scoring spree, connecting on two fast breaks and a jumper to take a significant lead of 26-9, with just under seven minutes left in the first half. A late run by the visitors got them to double digits, but Western maintained comfortable with a 38-19 lead.

The second half saw the visiting Lobos turn it up a notch but Western stayed steady.

Up 61-45 with three and half minutes left to play, Western would only score once more. The Lobos would score the last few points before time ran out.

After three games against non-conference opponents, the women will look to build on their 1-1 record in the Lone Star this weekend as they play host to Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M.
