Men's Basketball Set to Take on Heartland Conf. Members St. Mary's and St. Edwards

Silver City, N.M—The Western New Mexico Men's Basketball team hits the road again, this time to take on Heartland Conference members St. Mary's and St. Edwards. The Heartland Conference is set to join the Lone Star starting the fall of 2019.

Coming off a tough conference opening loss to UT- Permian Basin, the Mustangs will take a break from conference play and get familiar with the two teams they will face in the upcoming seasons.
Seniors, Willie McCray (Clovis, NM/Clovis/Westwind Prep Academy) and Jon-Reese Woodson (Corpus Christi, TX/Carroll) continue to lead the Mustangs offense, averaging 15 and 14 points respectively. Woodson also leads the team in rebounds averaging six per game. The Mustangs have kept it close with their opponents averaging about 74 points per game, while holding their opponents to 77 points.

St. Mary's currently sit 6-5 overall, and 1-1 in conference play. Earlier this month they fell to St. Edwards 84-68, and fell to fellow Lone Star member Angelo State by a similar score this past weekend. On a two game losing streak, the Rattlers will look to their leading scorer, junior guard Marques Houston who averages 15.7 points per game.

St. Edwards is currently riding a three-game winning streak after defeating Texas A&M- Kingsville, 88-83 on Dec. 5^th. The Hilltoppers are 9-1 overall, with their lone loss on the season coming to Kingsville in their first meeting in November. Junior guard, Ashton Spears leads the offensive output, averaging 18 points per game.
