Vickery Leads Lady Mustangs in Exhibition Contest at Arizona

Tucson, AZ-- For the second year, now sophomore, Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) led the Lady Mustangs with 17 points as they fell to host NCAA Division I Arizona Wilcats, 78-41 in Monday nights exhibition match. 

Similar to their game against UTEP, the Wildcats opened the game outscoring the Mustangs 20-5.  Western committed 14 turnovers, forcing 15 and each team finished with seven steals. 

Vickery connected on five field goals and five three-pointers, adding four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Senior, Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) finished 3-8 from the field, and 2-6 from the three to finish with eight points for the Mustangs. Destiney Johnson (El Paso, Texas/Parkland High School), Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School), and Fields all finished with five rebounds. 

Vickery got the Mustangs on the board, connecting from deep at the 6:19 mark, adding two free throws to round out the Mustang scoring in the first. Western caught fire in the second narrowing the margin 15-19, going into the half down 20-39. 
The third saw the Mustangs combine for double-digits again, but could not match the 67 percent shooting and a 14-2 scoring run by the Wildcats. 

Arizona's defense kept the Mustangs to 26 percent shooting and finished the game with a 45-29 edge in rebounds.Dominique McBride and Aari McDonald each tallied 17 points, while newcomer Cate Reese finished with 11 points and 12 rebounds for her second consecutive double-double. 


The Mustangs look to rebound this weekend, as they head to Portales. NM for a Conference Challenge. Play begins at 4:30 p.m. on Friday as the Mustangs take on Fort Lewis College, followed by New Mexico Highlands on Saturday at 5:30 p.m (MST)
