Lady Mustangs Fall in First Game of Thanksgiving Classic

Grand Junction, CO—The Mountaineers came to play, converting on 3-5 three-pointers to give them a sizable 18-9 advantage after the first quarter. A fast break by Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School), and converted free throws cut the lead to 21-24 going into the break.
 
Costly turnovers by the Mustangs gave way to Western State's largest lead of the game at 42-28 going into the final quarter. The Mountaineers converted on 20-of-48 shots from the field for a 41.7 percent over the Mustangs 36 percent. The Mustangs were outscored in the paint 26-20 and gave up eight points on turnovers.
 
The Mountaineers outscored the Mustangs 18-9 in the first quarter, 18-7 in the third and took a 34-30 advantage in rebounds. Despite a 24-14 scoring advantage in the fourth, the Mustangs fell short 52-56 for their first loss on the young season.
 
Sophomore, Cassandra Vickery (Tularosa, NM/Tularosa) led all scorers with 13 points, 3-8 from the field and 1-2 from the behind the arc. Tatyanna McFarland (Riverside, California/Valley View High School) was one rebound away from her second double-double of the season, tallying nine rebounds and 11 points for the Lady Mustangs.
 
Western New Mexico takes on home team, the Colorado Mesa Mavericks, tomorrow at 5 p.m.
