Volleyball Gets Back in the Win Column with a Five-Set Win Over UT-Permian Basin

Odessa, Texas -- It took two hours and ten minutes, but the Mustangs came out victorious in their last road trip match against the Falcons of UT- Permian Basin this evening. Both teams entered the match falling in straight sets to Texas A&M - Commerce and Texas Woman on Friday and Saturday, looking for a win in tonight's match. 

Western dropped the first set 25-22, before charging back to tie the match with a 25-21 win in the second set. The Falcons would answer with a 25-15 third set win, forcing the Mustangs to win the fourth or go home.

Set four saw the Falcons go up 14-11 before a Mustang timeout. Western would continue to trail before a service error by the Falcons sparked a Mustang run. A kill by Delaney Seitz (Hillsboro, OR/Century High School) and a service ace by Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) pushed Western to a 20-18 lead before a Falcon timeout. A bad set and a block by Seitz and Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School) push the lead to four heading and three points away from evening the match and forcing a deciding set. Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) closed it out for the Mustangs pounding down three kills for the last three points. 

Set five started with a 4-0 Western run followed by a Falcon timeout. The Mustangs continued to maintain the lead with an 8-3 advantage going into the side switch. Western took a significant lead at 12-4, before two Falcon kills and two Mustang attack errors brought the home team within four. Two kills by setter Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School) gave the Mustangs the 15-10 victory. 

Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) got back to her double-digit ways compiling 20 kills to hit .170 on the night. Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) also posted double-digit kills finishing with 16 in the match to hit .115. Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School) was efficient tonight hitting .636 with 7 kills on 11 attempts and zero errors. 

Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School) who dished out 26 assists in the match, also amassed 7 kills, hit 240 and led the defensive efforts with 23 digs. Libero Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) finished closely behind with 21 digs. Hannah Tishlarich (Elk Grove, CA/Pleasant Grove High School) led the front row defensive efforts with 5 blocks out of the team's 7. 

The Mustangs return home to take on Tarleton State and Angelo State on Friday and Saturday respectively. First serve is set for 6 p.m. on both days.
