Mustangs Unable to Get Past #10 TexAnns

Silver City, N.M -- Efficient hitting and blocking by the TexAnns doomed the Mustangs this evening as the fell in straight sets to visiting Tarleton State.

Set one was exciting as the scores were kept tights with neither team allowing the other to get ahead by more than a few points. Selai Damuni (Kula, HI/Tempview High School) returned to the court tonight, and contributed significantly in the first set, recording 7 kills on 12 attempts with 2 errors to hit .417.

Western found themselves down 24-22, before coming out of a timeout to tie the set on a Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) kill, and a service ace by Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School). Tarleton would answer with a kill, before an attack error by the Mustangs gave the visitors the set at 26-24.

As a team the Mustangs hit .189 in the first set, but it was no match for Tarleton's .344.

Set two was all Tarleton as they took a 13-1 run and never looked back. The TexAnns tallied 13 kills, and 5 blocks in the second set. The Mustangs could not get their offense going as they hit -.100 as a team only recording four kills in a 25-9 loss.

The final set saw the Mustangs pick it up, as they fought back from a 20-13 deficit. The fight wasn't enough though as the TexAnns ran away with the 25-19 set and match win.

Selai Damuni (Kula, HI/Tempview High School) led the team with 12 kills, followed by Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) and Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) who each tallied 9. Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School) added four blocks, and Sarah Campoli (Weatherford, TX/Azle High School) finished with 17 assists.

Libero Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School), surpassed the 500 mark, with 516 digs on the season after tonight's match.

The Mustangs welcome Angelo State tomorrow at 6 p.m. (MST) as they push to end the season with a win.
