Football Falls Just Short In Kingsville

Kingsville,Texas-- The Mustangs posted a strong performance against the Javelinas of Texas A&M - Kingsville last night, falling just short in 37-34 loss. 

In a quick 2-play, 63 yard possession DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) rushed 61 yards to put the Mustangs on the board first at 11:17 in the first quarter. Kingsville would respond with just under four minutes left in the quarter on a 39-yard pass, but a failed kick kept Western ahead 7-6. 

A 56-yard run by Arkemus Baskerville (Lindenwald, NJ/Lenape) before the end of the first on a 6-play, 70 yard possession, increased the Mustang lead to 14-6 with just over a minute remaining in the quarter. 

The second quarter was all Kingsville as they connected on a 28-yard field goal to cut the Mustang lead to 14-9, followed by a 62-yard run at 9:19 to give the Javelinas a 16-14 advantage going into the break. 

In the first drive of the third quarter, Kingsville found Brent Hertel on a 19-yard pass. Another touchdown by the Javelinas at 5:54 put them ahead 30-14. 

DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) would come up big again for the Mustangs, taking matters into his own hands with a 36-yard, 1 play 8 second possession to score and cut into the Kiingsville lead. 

In the fourth and final quarter, Blayne Armstrong (Ozark, MO/Marshfield) connected with Elijah Jones (Gilbert, AZ/Campo Verde) in the endzone for another Mustang touchdown. Kingsville would score again at 5:52 to take a 37-27 lead. 

Once again Williams would not go down without a fight, rushing 50 yards to the endzone to bring the Mustangs to within 3 with just under five minutes left in the game.

Neither team would score again, as the clock ran out and the final score remained 37-34 in favor of the Javelinas. 

DeAndre Williams (Tucson, AZ/Tucson Magnet) finished the game with 14 carries, for 200 yards and three touchdowns for the Mustangs.

Errick Dorsey (North Fort Myers, FL/North Fort Myers) led the Mustang defense with 13 tackles on the night, followed by Matthew Macon (Hesperia, CA/Hesperia) with 10. 

Western returns home for their last home game against Midwestern State next Saturday at Ben Altamirano field. Kickoff is set for 12 p.m. (MT)
