Mustangs Unable to Tame #18 Lions

Silver City, N.M-- The Western New Mexico Mustangs came out strong, preventing the defending national champions from scoring in the first quarter.

With a 4th down and three to go, the Lions Michael Onuoha would intercept a pass by Blayne Armstrong (Ozark, MO/Marshfield) and return it 48 yards to the Western 12-yard line. It then took 3 plays and a total possession of 0:43 seconds for the Lions to score their first touchdown.

The Mustang defense would come up with key stops on the next Commerce possession. Connor Mowat (Lahaina, HI/Lahainaluna) came up with a huge sack for a loss of 8 yards to move the Lions back to their ten yard line, forcing them to punt.

Western's second drive of the 2nd quarter resulted in an interception by Danny Huckaby and returned 64 yards for the Lions second touchdown. Shortly after, Lion's Kaden Kohou would gain a pick-six of his own returning an interception 51 yards to increase the lions lead to 21.

With a few minutes left to play, a pass interference penalty by the Lions would save the Mustangs from another interception. Third and goal for the Mustangs, Gabriel Tomaszeki would take control and rush the ball two yards in to the end zone for a Mustang touchdown.

The Lions would score once more before the break on a 70 yard kickoff return by Reggie Kincade to put the Lions up 34-7 going into the break.

Commerce would score three more times in the second half for a final score of 55-7.

The Mustangs were lead by Arkemus Baskerville (Lindenwald, NJ/Lenape) who rushed for a gain of 78 yards on 10 attempts. Kourde Roberts (North Las Vegas, NV/Legacy) tallied three receptions for 41 yards receiving.

Connor Mowat (Lahaina, HI/Lahainaluna) led the defensive efforts with four solo tackles, one assisted for five total and two sacks for a loss of 12 yards.
