Volleyball Drops Five-Set Thriller

Deming, N.M—Western New Mexico volleyball traveled to Deming this evening to take on the Javelinas of Texas A&M- Kingsville. The prior meeting between these two teams back in September, saw the Mustangs come back from a two-set deficit before dropping the fifth set in extra points.

Tonight's match proved to be no different, with both teams battling it out to a deciding set.

The Javelinas would come out and take a narrow 25-22 set one edge over the Mustangs.

Set two was an exciting one, as the Mustangs came back late in the set to take a 24-23 lead. After a conflicting call, the teams played into extra points with the Mustangs coming out on top 27-25 on a Hannah Tishlarich (Elk Grove, CA/Pleasant Grove High School) ace.

Set three was all Kingsville as they took a dominant 25-15, and two-set lead over the Mustangs.

Similar to the last meeting, the Mustangs would not go down without a fight, going up 23-15 in before a 7-0 run by the Javelinas brought them back within one. Kills by Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) and Christiana DuBose (Bowie, MD/Bowie High School) gave the Mustangs set four, forcing a deciding set.

The fifth and final set was an exciting one. The Mustangs found themselves down early, 5-0 before a Augustine kill stopped the run. The teams traded points until the Mustangs took a 13-12 lead.

Kingsville would then rely on their senior, Madison Brabham who rallied of the final two kills to give the Javelinas the 15-13 win.

Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) led the Mustangs with 20 kills, followed by Erin Moss (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) with 15. Madelynn Culp (Vancouver, WA/Union High School) finished with 26 assists, one ace and nine digs, while Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) chipped in 27 digs on the night.

The Mustangs fall to 3-9 in conference play, and will hit the road next weekend to take on Midwestern State and Cameron.
