Silver City, N.M-- The Mustangs started of the second round of conference play last night against the Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M. The previous meeting between these two teams saw WT come out on top in straight sets. The Mustangs looked to redeem themselves after an 0-2 weekend, but fell just short dropping the match 3-1 (25-19, 20-25, 25-18, 25-20). The Mustangs move to 7-13 overall, 3-8 in conference play.
The Lady Buffs played consistently throughout the match with a .213 hitting average as a team, while holding the Mustangs to .142. Freshman,
Bria Augustine (Bell Flower, CA/Mayfair High School) continued to terminate in the front row, finishing the match with 12 kills, six errors on 38 swings for a .158 hitting percentage. Classmate,
Maggie Roe (Boulder City, NV/Boulder City High School) finished with 10 kills on the night, hitting an efficient .444. Middle blocker,
Deyzha Samuelu (Garden Grove, CA/Edison High School) also hit an impressive .385, with six kills, one error on 13 attempts.
Defensively for the Mustangs
Gabi Lau (Kailua, HI/University Laboratory School) brought her season total to 364 digs on the year, adding 22 in last nights match. Offensively, the setting duties were split between Mitchell, Campoli and Culp each finishing in double digits.
The Mustangs look to get back in the winner's column as the prepare to meet up with Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday, 6 p.m. at Deming High School.
