Fields Goes for a Game-High 21 Points Against Angelo State

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Junior Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) was once again ready to go for the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team as she led all-scorers with 21 points. Despite her strong effort, it wasn't enough against a much taller Angelo State University squad that posted the 74-52 Lone Star Conference victory Thursday night.

Fields went 6-13 from the field, 3-6 from three and 6-7 at the foul line to tally her game-high 21 points. In addition she pulled down five rebounds and added a block for good measure.

The difference in the game was the size that Angelo State (11-4, 6-3 LSC) had all over the floor, with several players well over 6-foot-1 and it showed in the rebounding as they held a 55-26 edge, including 30 rebounds coming on the offensive glass. They held a commanding 50-12 advantage on points in the paint. Leading the way was 6-foot-4 De'Anira Moore who had a monster game with 15 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks, two steals and an assist.

ASU started the scoring posting the first four points of the game over the first two-plus minutes. Fields started her night at the 7:03 mark of the first quarter when she drained a three-pointer. As it turned out, that would be the only points of the quarter for the Lady Mustangs (0-17, 0-9 LSC).

The Rambelles scored the final 16 points of the quarter to open up a 20-3 lead entering the second frame. After ASU scored the first points of the second quarter, junior Takiyah Lopez (El Paso, TX/Chapin) hit two from the line to snap the run.

Those foul shots helped spark a 7-0 spurt with senior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani) hitting a transition layup and Fields stepping back for a trey. WNMU fought the deficit back to 12 later in the quarter when senior Melody McLaughlin (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View) hit a three.

After that, ASU outscored the Lady Mustangs by six the remainder of the half for a 40-22 lead at the break.

The Rambelles pushed the lead to 26 midway through the third quarter, but WNMU came charging back. Lopez hit a three and after two at the line by Fields, Fields closed the 7-0 run with a jumper in the paint to leave ASU in front 51-32 with 4:21 to go in the third.

Both teams put up the same scores over the final two quarters with ASU tallying 17 to 15 for WNMU to provide the final margin.

Outside of the big game by Fields, Lopez reached double-figures with 12 points, as she connected on a pair of three's, along with five rebounds and three assists. McLaughlin led the way in rebounds with seven, while freshman Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) had four assists.

While Moore certainly led ASU, Mikayla Blount had a strong game as well with 11 points and five rebounds, Ekiya Gray added a double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds and Dezirae Hampton reached double-figures with 10 points. ASU had seven players score at least eight points.

In addition to leading the points in the paint, ASU also held the advantage on points off turnovers (18-4), second-chance points (27-4), bench points (22-9) and fastbreak points (16-2).

WNMU will host Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday afternoon starting at 2 p.m. inside Drag's Court. The Javelinas went to overtime with Eastern New Mexico earlier today with the Greyhounds picking up the 67-61 victory.
