Cameron Uses Bench and Points in the Paint to Power Past Lady Mustangs

LAWTON, Okla. – Following an even first quarter, Cameron University used a plus-24 advantage on points in the paint and a plus-32 effort on bench points to move in front midway through the second quarter on their way to defeating the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team 90-58 Saturday afternoon in Lone Star Conference play.

Cameron (6-10, 4-4 LSC) outscored WNMU (0-16, 0-8 LSC) 42-18 on points in the paint and 44-12 on bench points. They also turned 22 WNMU turnovers into a 30-11 points off turnovers advantage. The first quarter and fourth quarters were big for the Lady Mustangs as they scored 19 in the first and 21 in the fourth to stay even with the Aggies.

Senior Melody McLaughlin (Tucson, AZ/Mountain View) scored a season-high 14 points on 4-11 shooting. She also dished out three assists and added both a block and steal. Senior Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani) also reached double-figures with 11 points, five rebounds and three steals. Redshirt senior Myla Woods-Brown (Roswell, NM/Roswell) brought down a team-high 10 rebounds, the second time this season she grabbed at least 10 boards in a game. Freshman Rachel Francisco (Seattle, WA/Holy Names Academy) tallied four assists, to go along with nine points.

Junior Ciara Fields (El Paso, TX/El Dorado) and McLaughlin combined for a quick 5-0 spurt in 36 seconds to help boost the Lady Mustangs out to a 10-6 lead near the midway mark of the opening quarter. Fields and Botelho helped keep the advantage at three late in the quarter before the teams traded leads down the stretch and a three-pointer by Francisco even the score at 19 at the end of the first quarter.

CU came out ready to start the second quarter as they went on a 9-0 run over the first four minutes to open up a 28-19 lead. After McLaughlin hit two from the line, the Aggies reeled off the next 10 points to move out to a 38-21 lead late in the half.

A jumper by Francisco and then back-to-back three's by freshman Jenika Padilla (Las Vegas, NM/West Las Vegas) and Woods-Brown pulled WNMU back to within nine before CU scored the final five points to hold a 43-29 lead at the break.

Another 9-0 run started the third quarter for the Aggies, as combined with their run to end the half gave them a 14-0 spurt to jump out to a 52-29 lead. Fields grabbed a defensive rebound and turned it into a layup on the other end to pull back to within 18, but it was took much CU as they outscored the Lady Mustangs by 14 the remainder of the third frame to take a 69-37 lead into the final quarter.

WNMU recorded the final six points of the game when Botelho went for a three-point-play and junior Takiyah Lopez (El Paso, TX/Chapin) drilled a three-pointer to provide the final margin of 90-58.

The Aggies had five players in double-figures led by 16 from Andrea Martinez. Amaka Nwakamma added 14, Jamie Bonnarens with 13, Ava Battese with 12 and Parfitt McNair with 10. McNair nearly had a double-double with nine rebounds and she led the team in assists as well with five.

WNMU made 20-59 (34) from the field, 7-22 (32) from three and 11-16 (69) from the foul line. CU answered making 33-69 (48) from the field, 9-27 (33) from three and 15-24 (63) at the foul line.
