Wolves Use Big Second Quarter to Hold Off Mustangs

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Western Oregon University utilized a 33-point attack in the second quarter on their way to taking the 58-21 victory over the Western New Mexico University football team Saturday afternoon at Altamirano Field.
Turnovers again stung the Mustangs (0-3) as they committed six, with five interceptions and a fumble. Two of the interceptions were returned for scores as WOU (1-2) took advantage of the 6-1 turnover battle to hold a 36-7 points off turnover edge.

Redshirt senior quarterback Javia Hall (Dallas, TX/Skyline) completed 22-45 for 275 yards and two scores. He was under pressure throughout the game, as he was also sacked five times. Redshirt senior D'Angelo Bowie (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) caught six passes for 108 yards and two scores. Fellow senior Evan Beebe (Chula Vista, CA/Mater Dei Catholic) added six for 69 yards. The rushing attack was finally able to break through with senior Justin Harris (Temecula, CA/Chaparral) carrying 10 times for 81 yards and a touchdown, with a long of 36 yards, which is the longest carry of the season by any Mustang.

Nick Duckworth was accurate and opportunistic quarterbacking the Wolves as he completed 17-24 for 293 yards and four touchdowns. Shifty wide out Paul Revis broke free for 10 catches and 133 yards with a touchdown. Zack Suarez added two catches for 77 yards and two scores.

Curtis Anderson had a big game on defense for WOU as not only did he lead the team with seven tackles, he also had a tackle for loss and two interceptions, with one going for a score. Tyler Johnson was also a force with 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and an INT return for a touchdown.

Senior Ian Davis (Grass Valley, CA/Nevada Union) led the Mustangs with 10 tackles, including eight solo stops. Redshirt senior Dominic Barry (Moreno Valley, CA/Vista Del Lago) added nine tackles. Junior Joe Tito (Las Vegas, NV/Cimarron-Memorial) was in the backfield all game posting a pair of sacks, including a strip-sack that junior Connor Mowat (Lahaina, HI/Lahainaluna) recovered. Mowat added a pair of tackles for loss.

Early on, the Mustang defense came up strong. The Wolves were at the WNMU 17 and after moving just six yards, they tried a field goal on fourth-and-four at the 11. The 28-yard field goal sailed wide left to keep the game scoreless.

The defenses kept making plays the rest of the first quarter, as the Wolves got a drive going at the end of the first, that carried into the second and ended with a 38-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead a minute into the second.

WOU started what would be a huge second quarter, as they picked off Hall on the next drive and turned that into a touchdown three plays later when Duckworth hit Suarez for the 16-yard score and 10-0 lead.

Johnson then delivered his pick-six, as he intercepted a second-and-15 pass at the WOU 38 and returned it 62 yards for a TD and 17-0 lead with still 9:27 to play in the half. Another interception helped setup a six play, 34-yard drive that ended with a Duckworth to Revis seven-yard hookup and a 24-0 lead.

WNMU got the offense going on the next drive, as Harris had a big run and after Hall found Beebe for a pair of completions, he hit Bowie for a 35-yard score to leave WOU ahead 24-7 with 2:35 left in the second quarter.

The Wolves would add nine points over the remainder of the half to take a 33-7 lead into the break.

WNMU came out inspired to start the second half, as the offense scored on back-to-back drives to make things interesting. On the first drive of the third quarter, Hall rushed for a big 12-yard gain on fourth-and-four to keep the drive alive at the WOU 28. A face mask penalty had the ball at the 13 and Harris broke free for the touchdown to trim the deficit to 33-14.

A drive looked to be in the works for the Wolves on the next possession, as they were down to the WNMU 22, when Tito came through with the big strip-sack that Mowat recovered and took out near midfield.

Seven plays later, WNMU reached the end zone again when Hall hit Bowie for a 21-yard score in the far corner of the end zone to trim the deficit to just 12 at 33-21 with still 4:26 to play in the third. The Mustangs picked up a big pass interference penalty to help keep the drive alive on third-and-20.

Just when it looked like the Mustangs were ready to make a comeback, the Wolves quickly answered. After recovering the on-side kick, they converted a big third-and-nine to later setup a third-and-five TD pass that went 21 yards from Duckworth to Tingstad to move the lead back to 40-21 late in the third quarter.

WOU kept the pressure on from that point forward, holding WNMU on their next drive and turning that into a field goal. Then after a 13 play drive that ended with an INT in the end zone, the Wolves went six plays to push the lead to 50-21 with a six yard touchdown run. Anderson capped the afternoon for WOU with their second pick-six of the game, this one a 72-yard variety for the 58-21 victory.

WOU outgained WNMU 436-367 and penalties were a factor as well for both teams with WOU committing 8-72 and WNMU at 13-110.

WNMU remain at home this coming Saturday when they will play UT Permian Basin for Homecoming that will kickoff at 1:30 p.m.
