No. 15 Midwestern State gets Past Women’s Tennis on Senior Day


SILVER CITY, N.M. –
No. 15 Midwestern State entered the day not only as one of the top teams in the Lone Star Conference, but also in the nation as they were able to hold off a good effort from the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team and take the 9-0 victory Saturday in conference action.

The Lady Mustangs (3-17, 0-5 LSC) came the closest to winning at No. 1 doubles with seniors Annely Hezine/Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy) grabbing four games before a 4-8 loss. Freshmen Emma Siboni (Boulogne-Billancourt, France/Lycée La Fontaine)/Nadia Justiniano (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Santa Cruz International School) tallied three games in their match at No. 3 before a 3-8 setback, while redshirt junior Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado )/junior Jeanne Kolb (La Couroone, France/Lycée de l'Image et du Son ) lost at No. 2, 1-8.

In singles, Justiniano went three sets in her match at No. 6 as she lost the first set, 3-6, but came back strong with a 6-1 win in the second. In the third, she won three games before a 3-10 loss. Heinze at No. 2 also was in a tight battle as after falling in the first set, 3-6, she nearly won the second in a tiebreaker before a 6-7 loss. Freshman Karina Diaz (Laredo, TX/United) won five games in her match at No. 5, 2-6, 3-6, Goodland won four at No. 3, 3-6, 1-6, and both Newell at the top flight and Kolb at No. 4 fell by the same scores of 3-6, 0-6.

WNMU will travel to Phoenix to face Hawaii Pacific Monday before preparing for the Lone Star Conference Championships that will take place Apr. 21-22 in Arlington, Texas. Midwestern State (19-4, 5-0 LSC) won the regular season title and will enter as the top seed.
