Women’s Tennis Plays Tough Against No. 24 Cameron

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Following three very close doubles matches, the Western New Mexico University women's tennis team was in good shape against No. 24 Cameron before the Aggies were able to pull away in singles for the 7-2 Lone Star Conference victory Friday.

WNMU (3-16, 0-4 LSC) and CU (12-10, 3-1 LSC) went toe-to-toe in doubles play as freshmen Emma Siboni (Boulogne-Billancourt, France/Lycée La Fontaine)/Nadia Justiniano (Santa Cruz, Bolivia/Santa Cruz International School) claimed the 8-6 win at No. 3. Seniors Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey)/Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy) went as far as they could in their match at the top flight before falling just short 8-9. Redshirt junior Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado )/junior Jeanne Kolb (La Couroone, France/Lycée de l'Image et du Son ) nearly went to a tiebreaker as well at No. 2 before a 7-9 setback.

In singles, Justiniano claimed the point for the Lady Mustangs at No. 6 as she cruised to the 6-2, 6-2 victory. The Aggies would end up taking the other five singles matches all in straight sets, but a few of them were close. Siboni at No. 5 went to the limit in both of her sets as she dropped the opening set 5-7 and then went to a tiebreaker in the second before falling 6-7 (3). Goodland at No. 3 and Kolb at No. 4 each came close in their first sets before falling by the same scores of 5-7. Goodland lost her second set 2-6, while Kolb fell 0-6 in her second set. Heinze at No. 2 won six games before falling 3-6, 3-6 and Newell at the top flight won four games before a 2-6, 2-6 setback.

WNMU will close out the conference portion of the regular season tomorrow (Saturday) against No. 15 Midwestern State starting at 8 a.m. at the WNMU Tennis Courts.
