Women’s Tennis Rolls to Second Win of the Season

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The Western New Mexico University women's tennis team is off to a strong start this spring season posting a pair of wins after defeating Eastern Arizona 8-1 Wednesday afternoon.

In doubles, WNMU (2-0) was able to get all three points, although they were tested at No. 2. Redshirt junior Tiffany Newell (Las Vegas, NV/Silverado )/freshman Karina Diaz (Laredo, TX/United) posted the largest win of the doubles taking the 8-3 win at No. 3. Seniors Annely Heinze (San Luis Potosi, Mexico/Techologico de Monterrey)/Gemma Goodland (Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/Maribyrnong College Sports Academy) added an 8-4 win at the top flight and then the duo of freshmen Emma Siboni (Boulogne-Billancourt, France/Lycée La Fontaine)/Nadia Justiniano (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) had to work hard, but claimed the 9-7 win at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep.

In singles, Goodland, Siboni and Justiniano dropped the fewest games with each only losing three in their matches. Goodland at No. 3 and Siboni at No. 4 won by the same scores of 6-3, 6-0, while Justiniano collected the 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 6. Diaz had little trouble with her match at No. 5 as she won 6-2, 6-2. Newell had to fight to pull out her win at the top flight, as she won a first set tiebreaker, 7-6, and then cruised in the second set, 6-2. Heinze also had a tiebreaker in her first set at No. 2, but wasn't able to win hers and also lost the second set, 6-7, 0-3, as she retired.

WNMU will return to action on Feb. 15 when they will play at Division I Grand Canyon starting at 11 a.m.
