#21 Angelo State Next up for Softball

SILVER CITY, N.M. – The start to the Lone Star Conference slate doesn't get any easier for the Western New Mexico University softball team as they face No. 21 Angelo State University this Friday through Sunday.

The teams will open the series with a single game Friday at 2 p.m. and then a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. A non-conference game between the two will close the series on Sunday at 12 p.m.

WNMU is 0-14 overall and 0-3 in the conference, but came really close to winning the final two games against Eastern New Mexico. The Lady Mustangs nearly scored the tying run in the middle game of the series, before falling 8-7 and then in the final game they held and early 1-0 lead before Eastern New Mexico rallied for the 4-2 victory. WNMU is hitting .276 as a team, while opponents are at .340. They have scored 46 runs and allowed 116.

Junior Mariangela Garcia (Tucson, AZ/Desert View) is on a current five-game hitting streak and holds a .419 batting average with 18 hits, seven doubles and seven RBI in starting every game at shortstop. Seniors Linzy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) and Lacy Granger (Carlsbad, NM/Carlsbad) are next with Linzy at .370 and Lacy at .333. Lacy leads the team in RBI with nine, while Linzy is tied with sophomore Ariana Maldonado (Albuquerque, NM/Cibola) for the second-most runs batted in with eight. Maldonado is the fourth Lady Mustang that is hitting over .300 at .326 and has the only home run on the team so far this season.

In the circle, redshirt senior Domi Shone (Gold Canyon, AZ/Mesquite) has logged 53.2 innings in 13 appearances, starting nine. She has a 6.26 ERA and 27 strikeouts. Freshman Thailia O'Neill has a 6.18 ERA in 17 innings of work and six total appearances. Freshman Lyana Waddell (Winkelman, AZ/San Manuel) has seen 18.2 innings in 10 appearances and holds an 11.62 ERA.

Angelo State is off to a strong start at 13-1 overall and 3-0 in the conference after sweeping Texas A&M-Kingsville last week. Their only loss came during the fifth game of the season to Florida Tech and are currently on a nine-game winning streak. As a team they hit .343 and allow a .160 average, they have scored 101 runs and allowed 25.

Danae Bina is hitting .419 to lead the team, while Karina Rocha and Kenedy Urbany have hit five home runs each and combined to drive in 24 runs. Both are hitting over .300 with Rocha at .387 and Urbany at .348. They have eight regulars in the lineup that are hitting at least .310. In the circle, Urbany also pitches and has a 0.59 ERA in 35.2 innings with a 5-0 record in eight appearances. Brandy Marlett has seen the most work logging 42 innings and starting seven games with a 5-1 record and 2.67 ERA. She has tallied 54 strikeouts to 16 walks.

Live stats will be available for Friday's and Sunday's games.
