Three Reach Double-Figures in Scoring for Women’s Basketball Against Texas Woman’s

SILVER CITY, N.M. – Senior Jordan Gutierrez (Albuquerque, NM/Valley ), along with juniors Jade Botelho (Honolulu, HI/Iolani ) and Keshaun Clark (Avondale, AZ/Agua Fria) all scored in double-digits to help lead the Western New Mexico University women's basketball team to a first quarter lead against Texas Woman's University. The Pioneers found their groove in the middle quarters on their way to taking the 78-52 Lone Star Conference victory Saturday afternoon.

WNMU (4-19, 0-16 LSC) jumped out to a four-point lead near the end of the first quarter and held a 15-13 lead through the first 10 minutes. TWU (15-9, 8-8 LSC) controlled the first nearly six minutes of the first quarter and were looking at the 11-6 advantage. The Lady Mustangs responded as a jumper by Gutierrez helped ignite a 9-2 run to close the quarter. Gutierrez added a three and then another jumper before Botelho closed the run with a layup to give WNMU the two-point lead entering the second frame.

The Pioneers scored the first six points of the second quarter and after Clark hit a foul shot and later a jumper at the 5:22 mark to bring the Lady Mustangs to within seven, Texas Woman's controlled play the remainder of the half as they outscored WNMU 23-9 in the second quarter to hold a 36-24 lead at halftime. Kenesha Saygo for the Pioneers had a big first half with 13 points, while Botelho answered with 10 for WNMU.

Redshirt sophomore Lucy Benning (El Paso, TX/El Paso) drilled a three-pointer near the midway point of the third quarter to leave the deficit still at 12 when, just like the second quarter, the Pioneers began to ramp up the offense. They went on a 15-4 run to close the third and move their lead from 12 to 23 at 62-39 heading to the fourth quarter.

The first three field goals of the fourth for WNMU were three-pointers, two by senior Jayla Brown (Phoenix, AZ/Desert Vista ) and the other by Clark. The lead got down to 17, but just like the other two quarters, Texas Woman's responded taking the final quarter by a score of 16-13 to take the victory.

Gutierrez led the offense with 11 points, she also grabbed five rebounds and added an assist. Botelho and Clark scored 10 points apiece, with Botelho tallying four steals. Sophomore Megan Looney (Phoenix, AZ/Apache Junction ) grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.

Saygo led Texas Woman's going for 19 points, while Kara Mitchell came away with 11 points. Morgan Easley, Emily Spector and Grace Mitchell all finished with nine points each. Easley was tough on the defensive end with six rebounds, four blocks and two steals.

The Pioneers dominated the glass holding the 55-38 advantage on rebounds, which led to a 52-20 edge on points in the paint. WNMU made just 19-71 (27) from the field, 5-25 (20) from three and 9-13 (69) at the foul line. TWU connected on 31-67 (46), 2-11 (18) from three and 14-23 (61) at the charity stripe. Outside of the big rebounding and points in the paint numbers favoring TWU, the other categories were close with the Pioneers taking the rest including points off turnovers (20-18), second-chance points (9-7), bench points (21-15) and fastbreak points (14-8).

The final road trip of the season will take place this coming week as WNMU will play at Cameron on Thursday starting at 5:30 p.m. before finishing the trip on Saturday at Midwestern State starting at 2 p.m. Both start times are Central Time.
