Volleyball Cruises to Sweep of Cameron

SILVER CITY, N.M. – After a tight back-and-forth opening set, the Western New Mexico University volleyball team rolled to a three-set sweep over Cameron University (25-23, 25-12, 25-21) Saturday night in Lone Star Conference action.

The way the opening set went, there was no telling how the match would turn out. But after WNMU (8-15, 8-7 LSC) pulled through with the first set, they dominated the second and then had to sweat out the win in the third.

With the victory, the Lady Mustangs have equaled last year's conference win total of eight with still five matches to play. They are also tied for fifth in the LSC standings with Angelo State. Eastern New Mexico lost to Midwestern State tonight to move Texas Woman's and Eastern New Mexico into a tie for seventh. Midwestern State is just a game back of both of those teams for a possible tournament spot.
WNMU hit around .200 throughout the match ending with a .206 clip (41-21-97), while holding Cameron (7-17, 3-12 LSC) to just a .111 percentage (31-20-99). In the second set in which WNMU rolled to the victory they limited CU to a negative .148 hitting clip.

The Aggies broke out to the early 10-7 lead in the first set. With Cameron still ahead 12-8, WNMU fought back with a 5-0 run to regain the lead at 13-12. Junior Aspen Luna (Rota, Spain/Farragut) started the run with a kill. Senior Kalie Lyle (Phoenix, AZ/Sandra Day O' Connor) added a pair of kills before a double-block by seniors Heather Verrill (Barstow, CA/Barstow) and Kelli McGhiey (Pearl City, HI/Sacred Hearts Academy) capped the run. After the Aggies knotted the set at 13, WNMU went on a 6-1 spurt to pull in front 19-14. McGhiey started the rally with a kill and after that Lyle, Verrill and senior Alanna Watt (Hague, Saskatchewan/Hague) added kills. Cameron refused to go away, coming back to tie the set at 20, 21 and again at 22. A Lyle kill and solo block by Verrill helped push WNMU to set point at 24-22. After a kill by Cameron, McGhiey ended the set with a kill for the 25-23 opening set win. Both teams came out swinging hitting over .200 in the first frame.

A service error by the Aggies helped boost a 4-0 run early in the second set to give WNMU an 8-5 lead. Verrill added another solo block and sophomore Sophia Mitchell (Katy, TX/Taylor) spun in an ace. Holding an 8-7 advantage, WNMU reeled off the next five points to post a 13-7 lead. Verrill, Watt and Lyle all had points, while the Aggies committed a pair of errors. A 9-1 run a few points later all but put the set away. Mitchell, Lyle, McGhiey and sophomore Hannah Tishlarich (Elk Grove, CA/Pleasant Grove) all had points during the spurt that left WNMU with a 24-10 lead. Following two points by Cameron, Watt ended the set with a kill for the 25-12 second set win and 2-0 match lead.

WNMU opened the third set ready to go posting the first four points with sophomore Cristal Carrizoza (Phoenix, AZ/North), Tishlarich and Lyle all tallying points. Ahead 8-6, Luna helped start a 5-0 run with a kill. Mitchell, Verrill and Luna all added more points during the run that left WNMU with a 13-6 lead. Holding a 15-10 lead, Cameron went on a 5-1 run to make things interesting to pull back to within a point at 16-15. McGhiey and Verrill tallied back-to-back kills to move back out to a 21-17 lead, but the Aggies didn't go away quietly. They fought back to within two on several occasions, with the last coming at 23-21. From that point on Lyle posted a kill and an attack error by Cameron sealed the set win at 25-21 and the match at 3-0.

WNMU held the advantage in kills (41-31), service aces (4-2), assists (36-31) and digs (39-31). Cameron held the 11-9 edge in blocks.

Lyle led the offense with 13 kills and hit .308. McGhiey tallied eight kills and Verrill with seven. Carrizoza tallied 18 assists, with Mitchell adding 10. On defense, senior Ashley Mataele (Laie, HI/Kahuku) had 15 digs and Tishlarich had five blocks and Verrill with four, including three solo.

Paige Dixon paced Cameron with nine kills, Brook Conley had 27 assists. On defense, Ashleight McFatridge had seven blocks, with one coming solo.

WNMU will have a quick turnaround as they will play at West Texas A&M this Tuesday starting at 6 p.m. (Central Time). West Texas A&M took down No. 11 Tarleton State 3-1 earlier today.
