Early Start Not Enough for Mustangs at Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, Texas – Despite putting the first points on the board, the Western New Mexico University football team ran into a difficult task Saturday as Angelo State University scored the next 44 points on their way to taking the 44-7 Lone Star Conference victory.

The game started out great for WNMU (2-7, 1-5 LSC) as the teams traded possessions before the Mustangs marched 53 yards on eight plays for the first points of the game. On the drive, WNMU picked up a big first down on third-and-three on a pass from redshirt senior Javia Hall (Dallas, TX/Skyline) to redshirt senior D'Angelo Bowie (Virginia Beach, VA/Landstown) that netted six yards. Another third down, this one a third-and-two at the ASU 20 was picked up on a two-yard run by senior Justin Harris (Temecula, CA/Chaparral). The next play found the end zone when Hall hit freshman Sean North (Corona, CA/Santiago) for the 18-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with six minutes to play in the opening quarter.

The Mustangs then were setup with great field position when junior Collin Grady (Glendora, CA/Glendora) executed a perfect on-side kick that he recovered at the WNMU 45. The only problem was, the next play Hall was sacked and subsequently fumbled that Angelo State (4-4, 2-4 LSC) picked up and ran down to the WNMU 28. They would turn that into a touchdown to tie the game at seven late in the quarter.

With the game tied at seven after the first quarter, the Rams exploded big time in the second quarter outscoring the Mustangs 28-0 to open up a 35-7 lead at the break. Angelo State scored on their first three drives of the quarter, before ending with a score late in the half. WNMU had a tough time moving the ball, as none of the drives crossed midfield.

It was a defensive struggle in the second half with Angelo State putting up three field goals to provide the final margin of 44-7.

Angelo State tallied 633 yards of offense on 99 plays with 352 coming through the air. WNMU countered with 241 yards with 173 coming through the air. Hall completed 18-44 for 173 yards and a touchdown, with a long pass of 37 yards. Senior Evan Beebe (Chula Vista, CA/Mater Dei Catholic) caught five passes for 91 yards. North added four for 40 yards. Harris rushed 16 times for 45 yards, with a long of 12 yards. Hall had the longest play from scrimmage for the Mustangs when he scampered 43 yards.

It was a big game on defense for seniors Dominic Barry (Moreno Valley, CA/Vista Del Lago) and Ian Davis (Grass Valley, CA/Nevada Union) as they combined for 25 tackles. Barry had 13 tackles, with three solo, along with 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry. Davis added 12 tackles, with nine coming solo and two passes broken up. Senior Leo Marin (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad) had a forced fumble and junior Isaiah Edwards (Jamul, CA/Valhalla) added an interception in the end zone.

Jake Faber completed 27-40 for 335 yards and three touchdowns to lead Angelo State. Tyrese Nathan caught four passes for 80 yards and a score. Lawson Ayo added five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. On the ground, Nathan rushed 15 times for 82 yards and a touchdown.

Justin Jackson led the defensive effort with 10 tackles, six solo, with one tackle for loss. Markus Jones had two sacks, while Leddy French had an interception.

WNMU will return home this coming Saturday for senior day against Texas A&M-Kingsville starting at 12 p.m.
